2019 ANNUAL REPORT

AN INITIATIVE BY

Closed-Loop-White-280px-HOZ.png
Rob.jpg

It's official.

Australian's have embraced Simply Cups.

We are so grateful to all our partners for helping us establish Australia's first cup recycling program.

Thanks to our amazing cup collection partners for your support, as well as your cups. Because of you, cup recycling has expanded beyond cafes and office buildings, and now includes shopping centres, markets, conference centres, hotels, and cinemas.

We would also like to thank our growing number of upcycling technology partners - finding innovative ways to give cups a second life.

Together we are building a circular economy that transforms our waste into Australian-made products.

Thank you,

7-Eleven were the leading cup collector, rescuing more than 2.6 million cups. In 2019, 7-Eleven added Cup Rescue points to an additional 350 stores, bringing their total Cup Rescue points to 632 stores Australia-wide.

PROMOTING CUP RECYCLING
7-Eleven heavily promoted Simply Cups via radio and social media advertising, teaching Australians how they can recycle their cups. They even branded a Simply Cups Tram!

FREE COFFEE CAMPAIGN
For 1 month, 7-Eleven rewarded Australians with Free Coffee when they brought their reusable cup. It takes 21 days to make or break a habit, so congratulations to 7-Eleven for creating another innovative way to tackle coffee cup waste, by encouraging people to choose reusables, including the rCUP they sell in-store.

UPCYCLING CUPS

upcycling icon.png

Recycling doesn't happen when you discard an object into a recycling bin, it only happens when that object is given a second life.

Closed Loop are continuing to partner with more technologies that can transform coffee cups into items of higher value. Our vision is to see Australian companies buying products, made form their waste.

stay tray.png

STAY TRAY

Stay Tray is Australia’s first and only reusable drink tray made from 100% recycled material. In 2019, we introduced Stay Tray made with Simply Cups.

Designed and manufactured in Victoria, the creation of Stay Tray will help reduce the 5 million tonnes of paper waste generated from cardboard trays every year.

Stay Tray made with Simply Cups won the 2020 World Packaging Organisation Award.

TRAYS & HOLDERS

We have been working with local plastic manufacturers and paper mills to add cups into their products.

We will soon be launching a brand of cafeteria trays made with Simply Cups. We believe this is a perfect way for shopping centres to demonstrate the circular economy in action.

We have been working with paper mills to transform paper cups back into moulded fibre products, such as egg cartons, fruit separators and cup holders.

tray and cartons.png

PLASTIC COMPOUNDING

Martogg are helping build a circular economy transforming used plastics and paper cups into a resin ready for injection moulding.

The resin will be available in different colours, and will make it easy for our plastic manufacturing partners to upcycle cups.

Newtecpoly was the first plastic recycler in Australia to make products from take-away cups. Our expanded range of upcycled products now includes wheel stops for car parks, road-side kerbing, outdoor seating, and bike lane separators.

A big shout out to our many partners who have bought these products, including 7-Eleven, KFC, McDonald’s, Vicinity Broadmeadows, Scotch College, Corangamite Council, and Dungog Shire.

INVESTING IN A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

OUR COMMITMENTS

Divert 100 million cups from landfill

Make it easier for people to recycle more cups.

Transform every used cup into an item of higher value

We will find a secondary use for any type of used paper cup.

Pioneer a circular economy

Build markets for upcycled products, and educate Australians that recycling doesn't happen when you place an item in a bin, recycling happens when you use a product made from recycled materials. To grow our circular economy, we must buy Australian Made and Recycled.

5 TIPS FOR RECYCLING MORE CUPS

1.) Recycle EVERY takeaway cup you use

Return all cups to a Simply Cups collection point.

2.) Educate a mate

Show others how to recycle their cups.

3.) Remove takeaway cups from general recycling bins

Many people still dispose their cups in co-mingled recycling bins, even though they won't be recycled.

4.) Pick up littered cups

Litter is terrible for wildlife and bad for the environment

5.) No contamination

Simply Cups can recycle any paper based cup (PE and PLA lined). Help us remove other material you see in cup collection points (e.g. bottles, cans, excess liquid, or other waste). Other material can contaminate the entire batch, and may result in the entire bag of cups not being recycled.

Closed Loop will donate $0.01 for every cup recycled via Simply Cups Australia collection points in January and February 2020, to help wildlife affected by bushfires.

The scale of Australia's bushfire crisis is unprecedented, and we encourage everyone to give what they can. Now you can help donate to the bushfire appeal by simply recycling your coffee cup, rather than sending it to landfill.

We encourage you to tell your staff or your patrons so we can collect as many cups as possible.

Donations will go to Wires Wildlife Rescue (NSW), and Wildlife Victoria.
