Supporting the health of Australians and the environment
Every year more than 39,000 Victorians are diagnosed with cancer, and more than 11,000 die from the disease.
As the largest non-government funder of cancer research in Victoria, Cancer Council Victoria marks its 90th year of dedication to improving cancer survival, advancing treatment, strengthening prevention efforts, supporting early detection and providing vital support services for those affected by cancer.

Driving sustainability in the office
Alongside its commitment to improving outcomes for future generations, Cancer Council Victoria is also mindful of its environmental footprint, always making a conscious effort to minimise their impact on the planet.

Through an active Sustainability Committee, staff are regularly engaged in recycling education and other initiatives that support more sustainable workplace practices, including paper cup recycling with Simply Cups.
Giving paper cups a second life, one climb at a time
As a cup of coffee becomes part of your daily routine, so does recycling paper cups with Simply Cups at BridgeClimb Sydney.

BridgeClimb are always looking for practical ways to reduce their environmental impact, so they recognised paper cup recycling as a simple but effective step to help minimise their contribution to landfill in both their office and customer areas. Since partnering with Simply Cups, their collection units need to be emptied daily due to all their team members and visitors embracing paper cup recycling.

Sustainable coffee runs with Simply Cups
Coffee runs are a staple during a workday, offering a convenient energy boost on busy days. But Cancer Council Victoria wanted a practical way to prevent takeaway coffee cups from ending up in landfill. Partnering with Simply Cups ensured staff and visitors had a convenient way to recycle their cups and save them from landfill.
The team has embraced the initiative without hesitation and are seizing the opportunity to champion environmental protection for future generations.

“Given that our office practically runs on coffee, it’s a huge relief to know that all those daily cups aren’t going to waste. Having a dedicated coffee cup recycling program means we can enjoy our caffeine fix while also doing the right thing for the environment. It’s a simple change that’s made a big difference to our sustainability efforts, and our team feels great knowing their habits are helping reduce landfill.”

Making every coffee count
Along with the consistent paper cup recycling promotion throughout their workplace, Cancer Council Victoria’s Sustainability Committee has been active in encouraging the use of reusable cups for when staff head out for a takeaway cuppa.

Staff are reminded to ‘bring their own’ cup with signage throughout the office, and if they forget, there are several reusable cups available to use.
Further sustainability efforts
Cancer Council Victoria are in the process of developing their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Policy and taking steps to improve their carbon footprint. Some of the other initiatives they engage with include:

-
Throughout the year, Cancer Council Victoria staff come together for clothing and book swaps, giving pre-loved items a new life and reducing waste in the process.

-
Education on ensuring staff use the right bins by providing three dedicated bins in the kitchen area for general waste, recycling and green waste.

-
Taking steps to a paperless workplace by reducing the number of photocopiers from 13 down to 4, which also leads to encouraging staff to choose a digital option wherever possible.

The data from Simply Cups on cups diverted from landfill contributes directly to Cancer Council Victoria’s reporting, helping to track progress and ensure their sustainability efforts are moving in the right direction.
